Video My Day

Video my long standing sides
The prides
In as I’m on the box with smiles
Video my day and turn the mirror around
Video the head heap .. now listen to the sound

“Walking down the staircase
1950’s glasses glint in terror and lace
The bodies are piled high
The garden has overflowed
The killing, many years past, shown”.

Video my daydreams
Play it all through the night

“ .. rain cascaded in torrents
The roads are almost blocked
Sheets of water crashing down”.
The lonely motel where no one goes
His mother is reincarnate in his body
His hands grip the blade of a knife
The gaunt house upon the hill
Amplifies that all is ill
For a mother couldn’t
Couldn’t really kill!

Change the video wash out the black and white
Cream the screen, splash the colour in….

“flitting back over the throttled throats
The disgraced policeman played the gas joke
Many women became famous victims
And timothy hung in the air for the crows.

Video the backdrop
Lance the casting
Prepare the next few hours of….

“like the taut guitar string
That’s ready to snap, real things
Go bump in the night
So, shit, where’s the damn light?
You draw the stake up over your head
Ready to plunge into the coldest heart,
To seal the fate of the undead
To destroy his every part.”

“ … for a damsel so sweet so fair
What would she want of me
A creature with lop sided frame
A curled face
Deaf through living with the bells
A ghost of the monsters that live in hell
I should perish here as the fires lap
The famed hunchback shall welcome the trap”.

Record the latest video
Try the instant replay,
Look out for the blips, the snow, the haze….

Centuries Past

If you go back many years
Before time was recording
Before the Northern Lights were showing
If you want to wait
For a little while
You will hear the little voice
That comes to us so very near

If you want to rest
Your aching limbs,
See the fires coming from the North
Give me your guiding hand
Let the years roll on past
Leave me your golden sands
Let me once again last
To see the fires, for their worth.

If you go back centuries old
Watching the sky fires hold
A laughing antelope’s head
That sticks in the eye instead
That mountains will crumble into the sea
Rivers dry up thus whither the tree.

If you want to wait
For a little while
If you want to rest
Your wasting limbs
Go back many years
To the time when you go North
For centuries past
We never really last
More than one, so I’m told
When you become so very old.

If you want to stay inside of here
Rest your weary head beside each year
Well into the lasting night
Keeping your eyes out of sight
The North star will be your only light
The shape of which is our delight
From paradise the word was won
From Utopia the word was born
I tore the books limb from limb
Re-wrote every sacred hymn
For life is struggling within
The light is now becoming dim
I was dripping with a grin
Where Northern Lights are on the brim
Of gardens inside everyone’s brain.

ANGEL NASH SINGS – CHILDREN IN EXILE

2023 Narrowboat Sessions. Angel Nash, Children in Exile.

We do love it when we have fellow Narrowboat Dwellers aboard as we have so much in common with them. Not only is Angel Nash a denizen of The Cut but she’s been a professional musician for over thirty-four years. Although she’s based around Bath Angel continuously cruises our canals moving on every few days but that doesn’t stop her from finding the time to write some excellent songs. Here’s her first one from her session with us, ‘Children in Exile’. She wrote this whilst she was in London, you can quite easily make out the Jamaican Community influence in it.

Third Ear Band – Music Gig – Hyde Park 1969

I went to the Rolling Stones Free Hyde Park Festival in Summer of 1969 to honour Brian Jones (an original member of the Stones) who sadly died shortly beforehand. Someone at the festival had presence of mind to film a short excerpt and here it is – Third Ear Band – Hyde Park 1969 – YouTube

The Stones performance was amazing, of course, but what amazed me equally was Third Ear Band set. Whilst sitting on the grass waiting for king Crimson to come on stage (for their first ever live performance) we heard what sounded like people tuning their violins and other instruments – but it sounded really good. After about 5 minutes of Third Ear Band I caught on to what they were doing – acoustic improvisation accompanied by Glen Sweeney playing the tabla.

At the time I had no idea who this band was as I had never heard of them before, but I liked them on first hearing – playing tracks from their first album – Alchemy.

Burn On

Let the devil burn
Let the liar learn
Come in from nowhere
Where an ego is flying
Where an unknown
Man is dying
Let the dying die
Let the lying lie
(Beefheart lyric)

Burn Out

Now now the somehow
Leaves the know how
Whitened fists lie low
Burning until we all know
The charred dark eyes
Living, burning up the lies

Burn Down

She walks like a chicken
Big chicken legs
Round the place where I live
Walking slapping
Her hips, snapping
An eye till the house
Burned down.

Working Through Pain

I’m sifting through my back pages
For they have been around for ages
How do I deal with darkness within
The book of memory I am thinking?

Does the pain overwhelm my desire
To overcome such a painful fire
That burns in my breast, being heavy
Is caused by twisted thoughts really.

Like looking through a photo album
I see the pictures that only sum
Up how they pain me, but not why,
The reasons are obscured but I try.

Time and again I am knocked about
With the deeds and words I shout
From within but no one hears me,
Did I deserve others to abuse me?

What did I do that they cut me up
What excuse can they put in my cup
As I sip teas of disturbing scenes
That play out inside my head mean.

What price are friendships on the rocks
As havoc is played mixing the shocks
I get from toxic minds and hearts
Did I miss something, what is my part?

BIBLE STORY  2

THE DAY GOD SMOTE MOSES

And God said unto Moses
“Goest ye into the desert
And make thyself thirst for the knowledge
Of the kingdom of God.

And Moses replieth
“You must be nuts
If you think I’m going into the desert.”

God was full of wrath, pointing his finger angrily
Turned Moses’s Rolls Royce into a pushbike!”

Cock-A-Hoop

Escape into the latest prison
And the smile
That was once the length
Of a day
Will slip into the dancing
butterfly’s meagre home.
Go to the wall
Listen to your dreams
Read your latest headlines.

Watch as the prison bars
Turn out to be marshmallow
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
At the wise old moon.

Simmer
In this summer
With knowledge
Watch the prison warders
As they melt away from reality
That can only be theirs
They fade and die
Fade and die
Because I created them

Escape in to the deepest dungeon
As your thoughts
Find unused discarded knives
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
At the fading sun.

Dream your dreams away
Rainy day dream away
The laughter echoes
Inside these prison walls
Watch my hand
As it fades away
As the daylight crawls
Towards another day.

Don’t watch me
As I scratch another word for free
Leave the switch on
As the smile broadens
And the day becomes long.

Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
The world will smile with you
Escape into the wordage
Of well worn paths
Listen to the escaping gases
Make only the slightest guesses
Then cry with the baying wolves
For I have cool reminder
Of what can only be seen as cruel.

Your prison hearts are antelopes eyes
Your smiles are not even there at all
Don’t spin the sun
I’m not here for fun
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
Watch your feet dry up.

Escape into the guessing game
You can ride with me
As I lift off into the sky
Don’t be too strong
Leave these prison walls
Holiday in the balm
Of discovering where you stand;
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
At the wise old moon.
