Third Ear Band – Music Gig – Hyde Park 1969

I went to the Rolling Stones Free Hyde Park Festival in Summer of 1969 to honour Brian Jones (an original member of the Stones) who sadly died shortly beforehand. Someone at the festival had presence of mind to film a short excerpt and here it is – Third Ear Band – Hyde Park 1969 – YouTube

The Stones performance was amazing, of course, but what amazed me equally was Third Ear Band set. Whilst sitting on the grass waiting for king Crimson to come on stage (for their first ever live performance) we heard what sounded like people tuning their violins and other instruments – but it sounded really good. After about 5 minutes of Third Ear Band I caught on to what they were doing – acoustic improvisation accompanied by Glen Sweeney playing the tabla.

At the time I had no idea who this band was as I had never heard of them before, but I liked them on first hearing – playing tracks from their first album – Alchemy.

Burn On

Let the devil burn
Let the liar learn
Come in from nowhere
Where an ego is flying
Where an unknown
Man is dying
Let the dying die
Let the lying lie
(Beefheart lyric)

Burn Out

Now now the somehow
Leaves the know how
Whitened fists lie low
Burning until we all know
The charred dark eyes
Living, burning up the lies

Burn Down

She walks like a chicken
Big chicken legs
Round the place where I live
Walking slapping
Her hips, snapping
An eye till the house
Burned down.

Working Through Pain

I’m sifting through my back pages
For they have been around for ages
How do I deal with darkness within
The book of memory I am thinking?

Does the pain overwhelm my desire
To overcome such a painful fire
That burns in my breast, being heavy
Is caused by twisted thoughts really.

Like looking through a photo album
I see the pictures that only sum
Up how they pain me, but not why,
The reasons are obscured but I try.

Time and again I am knocked about
With the deeds and words I shout
From within but no one hears me,
Did I deserve others to abuse me?

What did I do that they cut me up
What excuse can they put in my cup
As I sip teas of disturbing scenes
That play out inside my head mean.

What price are friendships on the rocks
As havoc is played mixing the shocks
I get from toxic minds and hearts
Did I miss something, what is my part?

BIBLE STORY  2

THE DAY GOD SMOTE MOSES

And God said unto Moses
“Goest ye into the desert
And make thyself thirst for the knowledge
Of the kingdom of God.

And Moses replieth
“You must be nuts
If you think I’m going into the desert.”

God was full of wrath, pointing his finger angrily
Turned Moses’s Rolls Royce into a pushbike!”

Cock-A-Hoop

Escape into the latest prison
And the smile
That was once the length
Of a day
Will slip into the dancing
butterfly’s meagre home.
Go to the wall
Listen to your dreams
Read your latest headlines.

Watch as the prison bars
Turn out to be marshmallow
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
At the wise old moon.

Simmer
In this summer
With knowledge
Watch the prison warders
As they melt away from reality
That can only be theirs
They fade and die
Fade and die
Because I created them

Escape in to the deepest dungeon
As your thoughts
Find unused discarded knives
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
At the fading sun.

Dream your dreams away
Rainy day dream away
The laughter echoes
Inside these prison walls
Watch my hand
As it fades away
As the daylight crawls
Towards another day.

Don’t watch me
As I scratch another word for free
Leave the switch on
As the smile broadens
And the day becomes long.

Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
The world will smile with you
Escape into the wordage
Of well worn paths
Listen to the escaping gases
Make only the slightest guesses
Then cry with the baying wolves
For I have cool reminder
Of what can only be seen as cruel.

Your prison hearts are antelopes eyes
Your smiles are not even there at all
Don’t spin the sun
I’m not here for fun
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
Watch your feet dry up.

Escape into the guessing game
You can ride with me
As I lift off into the sky
Don’t be too strong
Leave these prison walls
Holiday in the balm
Of discovering where you stand;
Laugh with me
Dance with the laughter
Cock your smile
At the wise old moon.

War 1968/ 1988/ 2008?

The imagination dies first
As it is the one unarmed,
The satisfaction thirst
Goes next, causing great harm.

The energy is extinguished
As one brings out the dead
The praying undistinguished
As the bleeding soaks each bed.

The crying is illuminated
As the planes soar overhead
The bombing appears dated,
But in ash humanity is levelled.

The consumer nation is uncovered
As America sells the ultimate;
The Mushrooms are unfettered
As hate follows the last advert.

Cool Subjective Looks 1998

tree,night,park,nature

Don’t give me your sharp swords
For I’ll find the blunt end only

Don’t speak to me of the next life
For I’ll find the deaf ears of convenience.

Don’t sit with my bleeding conscience
For I’ll find the nearest crying rock

Don’t crowd me with your crazy politics
For I’ll find every dead word full of worms

Don’t lie to me with your words of wisdom
For I‘ll find every excuse to lie down and die.

Don’t hear me when I bleed into the sky
For I’ll bandage your eyes so you can’t find me

Don’t wear phrases of death and coldness
For I’ll find the heat controls of boldness.

Don’t skim my head with your razor eyes
For I’ll find a shelter from your cool looks

Don’t burn me with your hatred filled books
For I’ll find the sharpness wearing a smile.

Don’t give me your axes, knives and bullets
For I’ll find, for you, your God has left forever.

Phoot!

Lose my head in the crowding noises
Give my heart the lance of hypocrisies
Lend the meat of dancing to the mad spies
Expend my words on the wriggling excuses.

Die Die the burning reasons where no one really dies,
Go to the wall where no one really hears the cries
Sink the vision where hell shouts hello hello
Avoid the speeding train that speedily arrives.

                     II

No one stands, everyone lies down
The increasing winds, write their own end
In the eyes of hurricanes, the laughter sings
My electric energies dance slower and slower.

Go to the far side of daylight
Bring the fire of life to a new height
For my list has melted fast
The gulls in my head won’t be last.
